Meet the Midwivies

Sylvia Fedyk
Sylvia has worked as a midwife since January of 1998 when she was part of the first wave of Registered
Midwives to practice in BC. It was the birth of her fifth child that inspired Sylvia to become a midwife andshe used a complicated sixth pregnancy with bed-rest to upgrade her science courses in preparation fora midwifery education. As part of the first group of registered midwives in the province, Sylvia workedhard for recognition and integration of midwifery as a health profession. Sylvia was privileged to beginher career with Jean Cooper, a founding BC midwife who established the original Ridge Meadows
Midwifery Practice (RMMP). Sylvia continued that practice with an ever-growing cast of midwives after
Jean’s untimely death and helped it evolve into Transitions Midwifery with service focused in Maple
Ridge, Pitt Meadows and Tri-Cities. Sylvia enjoys her role as an Associate Clinical Professor for UBC’s
Midwifery Program and has served as Past President of the College of Midwives of BC and as Division
Head of Midwifery in the Fraser Health Authority. When not working, she treasures time with her family
of eight adult children and their partners and one treasured grandchild, travel adventures with her
husband, and playing Dungeons and Dragons. Sylvia will be forever grateful for the sacrifices her family
made–and still makes—for her to indulge her love of this profession and extends grateful thanks to all
the mentor midwives who taught her and inspired her

Erin Killian ( On Maternity Leave)
Erin was born and raised in Northern Ontario and received her Honours Bachelor of Health Science,
Midwifery, from Laurentian University in 2014. She was exposed to midwifery care at a young age when
a midwife attended her brother’s home birth, but it was a six-month family backpacking trip through
South America as a teen that first developed her passion for women’s health and the importance of safe,
accessible maternal care. During her post-secondary studies, she had the opportunity to train at both
rural and urban practices in northern and southern Ontario and spent a month working in Tanzania,
Africa, providing midwifery care and helping assess the need for a rural birth clinic. After graduating, the sense of adventure drew Erin to accept a position with Transitions Midwifery in Maple Ridge, BC.
Erin has been practicing in the community since 2014, caring for hundreds of clients and
their families. Erin currently lives in Maple Ridge with her husband and two sons. She was a client of Transitions Midwifery for both of her births in 2022 and more recently in 2024. Her two vastly different deliveries have given her first-hand experience and a further appreciation of the midwifery profession helping shape the care provider she is today.

Denise Heming
Welcome to Transitions Midwifery! Recently, I had the honour of marrying the love of my life so some in
the community may already know me as Denise Nyce. I am very excited to continue serving Maple Ridge
and Pitt Meadows. I am thrilled to support families throughout their special time of pregnancy and birth.
I moved to the Lower Mainland in December 2020 and feel welcomed by the warm hospitality of this
special community. Thank you for making me feel so accepted.
As a mother of three children, I have personally experienced what it feels like to be heard and supported
by a care provider. I endeavour to support all families under my care with evidence-based,
relationship-centred and autonomous maternity care. Childbirth is a very emotional, personal and
profound experience and I feel so blessed to be part of this noble profession. It is an absolute pleasure to
serve every family that comes into our care. Midwifery is an intrinsic part of who I am.
I have had a myriad of clinical experiences as a midwife, which has prepared me for practice within the
inter-professional team dynamics. Our local hospital, Ridge Meadows, is small and full of heart. I have
enjoyed both urban and rural midwifery and have learned to adapt to each community’s needs and
standards.
I am looking forward to meeting you and creating special memories for your pregnancy, birth and
immediate postpartum. Thank you again for joining Transitions for your special time.

Julia Homer
Hello, I am Julia and I am thrilled to be joining Transitions Midwifery! Thank-you for allowing me to join
you on your journey through pregnancy, birth and beyond. I recognize and acknowledge the First
Peoples on whose traditional territories we live and work. I honour the unceded and traditional shared
territories of the Katzie (kate-zee) and Kwantlen (kwant-len). I was first introduced to Midwifery care
shortly after it was regulated in British Columbia, in 2000. My experience as a young mother and having
a Midwife sparked an interest in working with pregnant people. I was mentored by a doula, who inspired
me to take the Doula Program at Douglas College. I attended births and taught prenatal classes to young
parents. I became a Practical Nurse. I have worked in Primary Care Community Health Clinics, homecare, and outreach nursing. I also spent many years invested in research both inpartnership with UBC and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. I then completed my Midwifery education at UBC and have had experience in Vancouver, Richmond, New West, Burnaby and Maple Ridge. Maple Ridge has been a wonderful community to live and work. I enjoy spending time outdoors, love music, dance, traveling and hiking with my family. I have two more children who are now 3 and 4 years old. I am looking forward to supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Alana Fuder
Hello, I’m Alana, and I am grateful to officially be joining Transitions as a midwife. During my senior year in UBC’s midwifery program, I had the privilege of learning alongside this incredible team.
A little about me: I started my post-secondary education in nursing at 19 years old and shortly after
became pregnant with my son. At that point in my life, I decided to dedicate the next 12 years to being a
stay-at-home Mom to my four children. During this time, I fell in love with the doula community and the
holistic, supportive care doulas offer to birthing individuals and their families. I became a doula in 2016
and supported families in the role of a doula for 5 years.
Throughout my doula career I found myself aspiring to partake in a more medical role within the birthing process; so, in 2018 I returned to school to complete a nursing program. Since graduating as a nurse, I have worked on a rural acute care unit as an LPN. In this role I cared for postpartum birthers and their babies, as well as other medical/surgical clients.
In 2024, I graduated with a degree in midwifery from UBC. Through my education and experience in the
medical system, I developed an awareness surrounding the importance of providing safe, accessible, and
client centred care. I am deeply passionate about holding these threads in my midwifery practice.
I am originally from Cold Lake, Alberta. My family and I relocated to the lower mainland in August 2021.
When I am not catching babies you can find me in the stands at the hockey arena, or at numerous other
sporting events, cheering on my children. I also love travelling and reading. I look forward to meeting
you, building relationships and practicing midwifery within this beautiful community!

Heather Olson
My passion for pregnancy and childbirth has been a constant throughout my life, and I’ve
always envisioned myself in a caring role to some degree. My journey into healthcare
began immediately after high school, initially pursuing kinesiology during my first few
years of post-secondary. Over time, my focus evolved toward psychological health and
well-being, leading me to earn a bachelor's degree in psychology in 2019.
When I first discovered midwifery, it felt like everything clicked. I’m happy to have
found a career that combines my love of both medicine and the humanities while offering
a sense of connection to the community and the opportunity to build strong relationships
with clients.
During my training in the UBC midwifery program, I gained experience in maternity care
across Greater Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and the South Okanagan. I’m excited to be
moving back to my home community to finish up my first year of practice as a registered
midwife.
On my days off, you’ll find me curled up with a book and a cup of coffee, either at home
or out camping somewhere. I’m grateful to all the families who welcome me during such
an important time in their lives, and I look forward to meeting you soon!
